Should You Surrender Privacy for Convenience, Security, Money, or Social Connections?

The chief executive officer of a large computer software company once declared, "Privacy is dead, deal with it." While a vast majority of people demand increased privacy, many of those same people do not hesitate to surrender personal information in exchange for some short-term benefit. In a recent study, one-third of Internet users admitted to making detailed personal information available on the Internet. Personal information has become similar to a currency that people give up in order to obtain a benefit. Benefits might be in the form of increased convenience, increased security, money savings, or social connections online. For example, increased convenience may be in the form of an automated toll collection device that also can track the user's location and speed, and allow the government to maintain a rec4rod of the user's whereabouts. Insistence on safety or security may mean tolerating video cameras in many public and private places. The use of a grocery store loyalty card saves a few dollars but also allows the store to track an individuals buyer's every purchase.  ----- Should people limit the amount of personal information they exchange? Why or why not? What are the dangers and disadvantages of giving up some amount of privacy in exchange for a short-term benefit? What are some possible alternatives to exchanging privacy for a perceived benefit? Should companies or government organizations be required to purge your personal information if you request so? Why or why not?

  1. i do not think that you should have to give up all over your privacy. although if you are trying to get a job or something to earn money you are gonna have to give up some of your privacy becasue they need to know about you and your past.

  2. Yes, I think people should limit how much personal information, because if you're giving out your personal information you always run the possibility of having your identity stolen. I think companies or the government should be required to purge your information if you ask them too, because it's your own personal information and whatever you want done with it is what should be done.

  3. I think people should limit what they put on the internet about themselves. If they dont want certain people to see it, don't put it out there for everyone to see. You might think that what you put up will help you at first, but when they don't need your information anymore, now it's out there and anyone can do anything with it. And companies shouldn't be allowed to do that because they don't know what people are gonna be looking at your information.

  4. I think that we should have more privacy because not having enought is how identity theift occurs. You should alway have a safer network why do the computer programer want to know what we are doing.

  5. I agree that people should limit the personal information they exchange online so there is not alot online for people to look at. Some dangers and disadvantages of giving up privacy are with the tracking of the users whereabouts is that someone that does not need that information could get a hold of it. An alternative to the privacy is the government can decide to just put cameras in the puplic places and not in any private place. The government should not be able to purge your information because that is yours to know and they do not need it.

  6. i think that there is a certain amount of information that you should give to something or a company. Someone could find or have all of your information and steel your identity or something. They could also know how to get your money. I think that companies do not need to have our information if we do not want to give it out.

  7. Its stupid how people want to put all kinds of personal info on the internet and then whine about it when people are in their personal life.
Its bull...just dont put it on the internet!

  8. Well, personally I don't think they should be able to acess your personal information. People could put in their information so many things that they don't want other people to know. Thats why most people who want to keep things to themselves use privacy settings. Even though you get a benefit. If you give your credit card on the internet, someone could hack onto it and it could be a bad case of identity theft. If you do have to give away some of your information. Do it in person, in this case for like a job. In a job interview they don't ask for your credit card or social security so your safe from the dangers.

  9. I think you should have a limit on how much you can put on the internet, not coounting visible police records, but depending on the job you have they should be able to know your personal information so they know who there hiring, and if they should hire you.

  10. I think you shaould have a limit to what give to companys or anything about your information. someone could find out your information and steal your identity.

  11. I think having to give up your privacy for a benefit is uneeded and dangerous. People should not have to give up information just to save a few dollars a week on groceries or gas.

  12. I feel like privacy is gone and you still should need some privacy for certain things. But I dont think anybody should be worrying about there privacy really because there the people who put all that personal information out there for the world to see. If they dont want people to see there stuff then dont put it on the internet.

  13. I think that people should limit their personal info. because then bad people won't get their personal information. The dangers and disadvantages of not limiting your personal info. would be getting your idenity stolen. One possible benefit would be that when you apply for a job, then the employer then sees good personal information which may help you get that job. Finally, i belive companies and the government should perge your info. upon request because as a American citizen you should be able to have that right.

Going on the internet to much can like be adicting and then you will never want to get off so u nee to have a timmer out and set it for an hour or two and when that is done they log out and do something eles. If you do go oin the internet becareful what u put on there.

  15. 1 No, people shouldnt limit what the say or do they should watch what information they are giving and there wont be an issue.
2 You have to be mature about giving info out. 3 Giving up info for a benfit can be dangerous because if you use wrong info they can't go and check for other info.
4 Just don't share your info with people it doesn't need to be shared with.
5 Yes, becuase then they can see if you are worthy of being hired for that job among many other things.

  16. People should be careful to how much information they give out about themselves because they don't know who they are talking to. Some disadvantages are that someone could tell you that they are someone else, and they could get a hold of all your information. If there was cameras everywhere on this world, you would not have to worry about something like this. The government should not be able to take all your personal information because that is your own business that they don't need to kno w about.

  18. Yes people should limit the amount of personal info they allow on the internet because of identity theft. The dangers are identity theft and the disadvantages are what are the companies getting out of it besides money. Go through a really safe company and not putting more info then needed. Yes if you ask for it because if you ask for it there is some important reason why you asked for it.

  19. Yes people should be aware that typing or putting to much personal info on the computer, can be harmful, becasue whatever gets put on teh computer stays on the computer. Well bad people can use your information, and make a new identity as yours and can use any info that you typed on the computer, for example debit and credit card numbers. If i was to typed any personal info, i would just write what my name was. I dont think the Government should do that to people's personal privacy, because its somebody's own information and if other people know then they'll be embarrased.

  20. I think that this just furthers my opinion that the online revolution should take a step backwards. Identity theft, debit card numbers, and even stalking happens because of the Internet. I think that we should go back in time a few years and let the government have the latest technology. Thank you for reading.

  21. I think that people should have their privacy. It would be annoying to not have it because, everyone would know what you are doing every minute of your life. But at the same time it could be bad if people are doing bad or illegal stuff with the privacy. So in my opinion I think it could go either way.

  22. I personally think that no should willingluy give their personal info to some one on matter the benifits an invasion of privasy is rude and compleatly unesisary weather its willinjg or un willing.

  23. I think that people should limit their personal info. I think this because you need privacy against strangers or people that you don't know. You woulodn't want a total stranger getting your personal information. The dangers and disadvantages are that people could find out personal information about you that you would not want strangers to know, or they could steal your identidy. Some alternatives to exchanging privacy for a perceived benefit could be if an employer sees good information about you and decides to hire you. I do not think that companies or government organizations should be required to purge your personal information if you request so becuase it is your privacy and I think it should be kept private.

  24. Yes i think people should limit the amount of personal info that they exchange because you don't know exactly who is going to see it. The danger in giving up info for a short term benefit would be having that info get out to people or places you don't know about or where you don't want it to go. I think companies should only give out your info if they have your consent to who it goes to. If i give out info, i would want to know who exactly is going to see it.

  25. People shouldnt have to be open about their life, and personal information. its called personal information for a reason, your informationn is only for you to know, and maybe close family members. not the whole world. so, yea i think people should limit their personal information. its just like, a person finding our your social security number, someone could take your identity.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Making available your personal information on the interet can be risky. You could have your identity stolen and criminals can find you. I can see why people would surrender their own privacy for convenience, security, money, and social connections. Money is our way of surviving and way of feeding families. However, all of the other things that people surrender their privacy for is risky. It may not come out bad for you, but in other instances, other people could be financially ruined and be in debt for the rest of their life because their identity was stolen and they lost all of their money.

  27. People should limit the amount of personal information they exchange because you never know what someone might do with that in formation. They could use it against you to get you in trouble or they could tell other people. Some dangers and disadvantages of giving up some amount of privacy in exchange for a short-term benefit are you getting in trouble for the personal information you gave out and you could put yourself in a dangerous situation if you give out your address or other information like that. Some alternatives to giving out personal information for a benefit are you can just forget about the benefit, your safety is more important, or you could give general information and not just private information. Companies or government organizations should be able to purge your personal information is you request it because they might need to know something to let you work. Let’s just say that you have a criminal record, then they need to be able to see it to know if they want to hire you or whatever.

  28. I think people should limit the amount of information they provide on the internet. It's not always best for anoyone to be able to find any type of information on you. There are a few dangers of giving up information on the internet. It may be available for anyone to see. People could find your personal information and steel your identity, in that case identity theft. There could be alternatives. Knowing that the information is blocked and only certain people would be able to see it. Yes it should be able to be purged, so not everyone can see your information, only the people that are required to do so.

  29. I believe that people should limit the information they put on the internet because identity theft and its just not safe for a person you don't even know to know personal things about you. I think the government should be able to have access to everyones personal file but only if they are completly neccasary.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I believe that people should limit the amount of personal information given on line. I believe that because you never know who will read it or where it will end up. The Danger of giving out amounts of privacy is the short-term benefit is probably not going to last as long as the effect of sharing the information.

  31. I think that we should have more safte network. I think this because we shouldn't have to worry about or private information being seen by someone that shouldn't see it. But we do have to worry about them kind of things. I think that it should get safer so people don't have to worry about someone seeing there important information.

  32. People should limit what they post on the internet because of safety. Posting whatever you think is your own choice, but people should think about who is going to see it first. Who knows what somebody is going to do once they find out more about you. I also dont think that the government should not be allowed to have access to our files, unless they have permission. In my opinion there should be consent before the government just goes through all of your personal things.

  33. You defenitly limit what info you give out. There are people out there that can get you your info, and find you. That's a scary thought. Everybody can see your info. And by everybody, I mean EVERYBODY. as in the entire world.Giving up your address, phone #, ect is dangerous. Because hackers can hack your computer. And even if it's for a little benifit, so what, you don't need to give out personal info like that.An alternative to this can be providing a fake email of some sort. No, the government should not require your personal info. Besides, what would they do with it anyway, it's not important to them!

  34. I think you should be careful of what you give out and who you give it to. Also I think it should stay personal even if it is required. Giving your personal information out can leade to bad things such as, hacking, junk mail, cyber bullying, etc. I think if it is important to you you should pervent it from being displayed online.

  35. I think that people should limit the information they give out. If you put out to much information you can get your identity stole. It's your choice how much information you give away on the internet. You just have to be smart about it. Personal Information is just for you to know, hense the word personal. I don't think people should know your personal information unless it is needed.

  36. Yes, I think that people should limit to what information they put on the internet. They should for their own saftey, other people could find out personal information. Giving out personal informtion can lead to getting your computer hacked or something else. Just don't share information on the internet that you wouldn't want people to see anywhere else. I don't think that the goverment, or businesses, shoud be able to see your personal information. They should have permission to first if they want to see it.

  37. Do you want a stalker? Or someone who wants to hack into your accounts and steal your imformation? Most hackers today can do things that you can't even imagine. Putting all your imformation out there isn't a good idea. Unless your a business on Facebook, i.e. a restraunt, trying to advertise, thats a different story. But think about it... would you want someone all up in your business or stealing your identity (identity theft)?

  38. I think people should limit their personal information because of people getting it. But that doesnt mean you cant post somethings but not very personal things like your adress or phone number because you never really know who is looking at you information. I dont think websites should ask for you information cause it is wrong and whats it to them.

  40. Yes, I think people should limit the amount of personal information they exchange bcause someone can easily steal their identity. Some of the dangers and disadvantages are by giving someone your information your identity can be stolen, and maybe everyone can see your personal information, or maybe submitted to some place you didn't want it to go. An alternative could be cameras.I think that companies and the government should purge your information if requested, because thats your ipersonal information not for everyone to be able to see.

  41. I think that it is important to keep your privacy because there are a lot of dangerous things that could hurt you or your identification. I also think that giving out your personey information is just leading to trouble for hackers and computer viruses. Overall I think that it is a bad idea to give people your private information.

  42. I think people should limit what they put on the internet. They should limit it because if they don't they can get hackers on their computer and the hacker could find them. Also if they don't limit people could get their info that they do not want having their stuff.

No i do not think that government and companies should require your personal information on the internet. Like i said before people could get other peoples stuff and like stalk them. This is dangerous because of thect that their are some weird people in this world and they could seriously hurt you if they got ahold of this stuff.

  43. Yes i do think that people should limit the amout of personal information they share because if they give out pin numbers and social security numbers they could get thier identity or money stolen. An alternative would be to not get the info at all.I dont think the govornment should have to get rid of your information because you put it out there and you should have to get rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think that there should be limitation on privacy things like e-mail and date of birth ect. Its not like they need all of that, they mainly need your name and date of birth. its not like they need your e-mail because they will probably just send you in-important stuff. thats what phones are for. if your ganna be late for work, call them. if the business is closed for snow, call the workers. e-mail is not needed.

  45. People should limit giving away privacy to other people because it isnt safe. Also people could know things about you that you dont want them to know about. Giving up privacy wouldnt be good because companies might not like something about you and then not hire you. Companies should be required to purge your personal information because you never know what the person you hired was like with out researching them. They could still be a criminal while working for you.

  46. I think that people should limit the amount of personal information they put on the internet for many different reasons. You don't know whose out there reading it, and who all has access to what you post so some random person could know everything about you. Not everyone in this world needs to know where you live, and the people that do need to know you can tell them in private. There are many dangers with giving out your personal information. People could use it against you, or use it to do bad things like a rapist coming to your house. You don't need to post everything on the web, if someone needs to know something you can tell them on the phone or through email. I think companies should be able to purge your information if you gave them the clearance to. If your telling them they can, then why would it be wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think that everyone should limit the information they give out to people becuase you never know what they can do to you. They could come find you and try to kill you or abuse you.I dont think companies should be able to purge your personal space because the information could get in the wrong hands and it could destroy your life.

  48. no i do not think that you should give up your securety for anything even if it a matter of life or death i think that you could get scamed or something

  49. People should be careful about what they post on the internet becuase anyone can see it. Some people can turn your words into something hateful toward someone else. Keep your information locked.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You should not give out your personal information to random people on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube. etc. You should do your best to keep yourself safe on the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You shouldn't give out all your information about yourself. One thing I know about giving information out is it could lead to dangerous things, like people you don't even know could hack into your computer and switch all your information to fake information about you. That could lead to stalkers and people you don't even know commenting and requesting your profile.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You should not give your personal information out to anyboby on the internet. They could easly hack your system. If you would give out your informatoon out to people on the internet make sure it is people you now and not just some random person. Because you never know what they could do with your information.

  53. I think that people should definetely watch how much information they share, because you never know when someone might have to make a quick judgement on you based on what you share online. People do definetely look at the information you post online, so you have to always be cautious of what you say.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think that people should limit the amount of information they give out so that people dont hack you. People could pretend to be you. I dont think companies should be able to make us give them our personal information because some people may try to steal it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Privacy has decreased greatly over the years and I do not think it benefits anybody. Private matters should not be needed for the workplace, unless there is a criminal background involved; therefore, things should still be kept tightly secured between the company and that individual. There should be a limit on personal information that is being exchange. Many people believe they have to answer all questions, but if they knew their rights there are somethings you do not need to answer. Information such as Social Security Numbers should also be kept private because it increases identity theft, especially if given electronically. In my opinion, things such as your SSN, birth date, address, and credit card numbers, ect. should be kept filed by paper because things put electronically have the potential to be seen by anyone who is smart enough to out smart a company's security system. In reality a company can look a person up and already get enough information to learn who they are and where they are from, so I think personal information should be kept limited when releasing it to others.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yes people should limit the amount of personal information they put on the Web because hackers could easily use your information and make high dollar purchases in your name when you would never spend that much money. The disadvantages of giving out personal information for a short-term benefit is stores and clerks can access your personal information and wipe your savings and checking account completely empty. There fore you would not have any money. No governments should not be aloud to purge your information even if you allow it because the internet is full of hackers and it will not benefit you in the long run.
