Infographic: How Employers Use Social Media to Hire and Fire
Have you ever Googled yourself? You should do it, but not to make yourself feel good about all of the references you can find to your person and/or your work, but to find out how much digital dirt you've left all over the Internet. That is, incriminating photographs or angry status updates posted after a late night out. Clean up as much as you can -- most of it will probably be self-produced and live on one or more of your social networking profiles (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) -- because digital dirt is listed at one of five ways to ensure that you'll never get hired in this new infographic from Mindflash.

  1. I think the poster is important for people who do these things. The poster will show them what they shouldn't be doing, and if they were already they should stop. Also important for people who dont do these things, so they know not to do them.

  2. I personally feel that our personal lives should be kept personal and private. If we vent our feelings about something we are angry or upset about, our employers should respect how we were feeling at the time. Honestly, they do have a right to look at our social profiles but, we have a right to privacy. I feel that it is unfair that if we vent our feelings and are upset that it may jepoardize a job that we may have.

  3. I think employeers should be able to look at peoples social pages. It is a good way to see if hiring that individual is good choice or not.

  4. Looking up a person on the internet is a smart way to find out what that person is like. It can help you find out if this person has good qualities for a job. It helps give a good impression on if this person has a positive additude and is a hard worker. The author makes a good point by saying this. I think you should keep your facebook and twitter clean with appropriate posts.

  5. i think that it is right for you to get in trouble for writing something bad on your social network. If you thinik you are responsible enough for you to get a social network you should keep all the negitive things to yourself. Also if you really are a good person you shouldnt have anything negitive to say about anything anyway. If you do you are likely to be fired or not highered by anyone.

  6. i think that the poster tells people what bad people do. theyre tellin them that they shouldnt do these things. so if people that want to hire someone sees bad things on their facebook or email and its bad they probably wouldnt want to hire them anymore. and if someone has a job and is sayin bad things about theyre job the boss most likely will fire them. so you shouldnt write anything bad on your facebook or email so you can get hired or you dont get fired. i am louis and i approve this message.

  9. Employers shouldn't be too nosy, as in looking at your life. In my opinion, it's too bad that letters decide your future, you don't always mean what you say online.

  10. I think it is perfectly fine for a person that is looking to hire you to go and search your name on all of these sites. They can find out information about you that could be very important. Also, if you only talk badly about past employers how are they to know you won't be saying the same about them in a couple months? I think this is a very smart way for companys to keep track of their employees.

  11. I believe that when you are applying for a job the imployer should be able to view your facebook and other acounts. My reason is, it is the same person on the facebook acount and on the job so the imployer should know what kind of person they are hirering. An example is if you are always using bad language on the web, you will probably us it on the job.

  12. Don't be sloppy on the internet! try to avoid saying bad words, or other things that might be hurtful to someone else, or yourself.

  13. It is questionable whether I would agree or disagree with employers being able to find refrences over the web about a person for hire. I like the idea of employers finding more about the person before hiring. It is important to make sure the person you know details about a person before are hiring. Although, I would not agree with employers being able to find out everthing about you. I would like to have some privacy, especially if the employer is someone you do not know personally.

  15. Digital dirt must not be taken lightly. More and more employers are now looking at what you post on social media websites. Wether or not you have "dirt" many times it will end up deciding if you get a job or not. You must be mindful of what goes on the internet under your name.

  16. In my opinion, employers should be allowed and are allowed to review people’s social networking sites. People put them up for others to see, the privacy settings are there for adjustments and how one sets them is their choice. Regardless of if an employer see’s your social networking page, others such as family and friends can see it, also. Vulgar language and pictures shouldn’t be posted to begin with and emotions weren’t meant to be posted on the entire internet, some personal things should be kept personal. Hence the reason the option to privately message someone was created. How someone uses and abuses their site is their personal preference and they will be the victims of their own abuse. People whom are reviewing résumés and potential employees have the right to know what they are getting themselves into and who they are hiring.

  17. i believe this poster helps alot of people out. It tells them not to do bad things. They should not be doing anything on that poster. The poster is telling them not to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i think people shouldnt be able to access your facebook info because people have a privacy setting for a reason. what your say on facebook is you but doesnt mean you act like that in public or around people you dont know. for example if you swear on facebook doesnt mean if some one hires you, you will swear all the time around other workers that you probably dont even know. most people that swear wont do it at work because most people want to keep their job.

    ReplyDelete
  19. i think it is a good idea for an employer to see what kind of person they are hiring. now they can see the background of the persons life and how they act or acted. since the employers now can see what kind of person they are, they can choose to hire or fire them. if the employers see how you were online and how you adressed things online, they might now want to hire you. its a good idea to see how the people act on their facebooks and other kind of accounts. That shows what knind of person they are.

  20. I think the poster is a good way to help people not do those things. Also it is a good way to repersent how to not do bad things that would lead you to not getting hired. So if people are dumb enough to do those things then I think they deserve not do have a job. Also if they do that stuff that is on the poster they need to take a look at the poster to stop doing it so they can get a job.

  21. I personally think that employers should not be able to see our personal things on the internet. I think this because yuo are different in person and that should count more than your online information. I also think that they shouldn't judge what you do on your free time or how you act with your friends. You act different when you are working or something, its not like you are gonna throw a party while you are working. So i really think that they do not deserve to read your personal information anywhere on the internet. The poster that is with this article really help the people understand that what they do online doesn't go away so theyshould watch what they do. It also explains all the different things that you can possibly do online.

  22. I think that employers should be aloud to look at your face book account or other accounts. I think this because the person on the account is you .

  23. I think it's kind of creepy how anyone that knows your name can google where you live or your phone number or personal information like that. Although, some might take another approach and think that it's good because if you need someone's address for something like a card or present all you have to do is google it so you don't have to ask them so they won't have any clue. I believe it is good that personal employers can look at your profile though because I know if I was in a position as a manager or something like that I wouldn't want someone partying out late everynight getting intoxicated. I would want the best out of my workers. And it can also really help tell you which person would better fit the job if you narrowed it down to a few people.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't think that the person who is hiring you should be able to look at your online profiles. You choose who you want to veiw it for a purpose. Even if they do look at it, you shouldn't have something bad on there. If you stay safe online then there is nothing to worry about when you try to get a job. You should know that the things are the poster shouldn't be done anyways.

  25. I believe that employers should look at peoples online "dirt" and see how you act or present youself online. If your employers are going to do this i think they should take into consideration that you may have been having a bad day. They should also talk to you about what they find and let you explain yourself.Because the You may have changed since the past and you should be givin the chance to redeem yourself before being instantly rejected. In the end i think that employers looking up potential workers is a goodthing so they can know a littel about you before they even hire you.

  26. I do not think a job should or shouldnt hire you based off your personal life. What you do in your free time is up to you. But if you go to work and do as your told and work hard dont give your boss anything to worry about why would it be a bother if in your free time you like to go out and hang with your friends and do a little bit of stupid things. Life shouldnt be about being safe about everything you do and that is what they want you to do be a goody all the time. People make mistakes and you shouldnt judge them be their mistakes you make them also. We are human not perfect.

  27. I think that it is a good thing that employers check your "digital dirt". I say this because, there are a lot of unresponsible people, and you can easily find the information you need to know about someone if you just type their name in a search engine. It really suprises me how much information you can find. The other day, i searched myself and I found information about me that happened five years ago. It just goes to show that you never can be too careful when it comes to keeping your private life private. You always need to think about digital dirt before you say something stupid online.

  28. I think your employees should not be able to see personal information because you might have a bad day and say mean things online. Also I think that everyone is different and everyone makes mistakes so they shouldnt be published on the internet

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it can be a good thing for jobs to check the internet because you dont want people that have a bad past or a criminal record working for you. It can hurt your job and your pruduction if you have bad influences around.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think that employers should be able to know what kind of attitude their employees have on life. It can affect their work and social lives.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think they shouldn;t look at you personal life. Personal lives are meant to be kept personal. You shouldn't nessacciarly post everything and put everything on you profile that Facebook tells you, like your cell phone number. Anyone can go look up you and go onto you profile and see you phone number then fake being on of you friends and get a lot of information they really don't need to or shouldn't. You should really think twice before putting your number and where you live on Facebook. Anyone can Google where you live and then get your age and everything. If you wouldn't want a stalker or some creeper texting you then don't put your cell phone number on your profile or on your wall. So many people put there cell phone numbers on there wall so not only there friends can see it but there friends of friends and there friends of friends, so pretty much over 1000 people know your number now. They may ignore it they my not, most people don't so watch what you so online.

  32. I don't think employers should be able to see our personal information. People have there facebook to "private" for a reason! Things that are personal should be kept personal. Maybe that person didn't want anyone to know about something. Everyone acts different around there friends then they would at work. The poster shows people that the things on the internet don't go away. If you swear and fight on Facebook, it gives you a bad image in real life. Just because you can say things on facebook, doesn't mean you should. Be postive on social networks! (:

  33. I think that it is wrong for jobs to search your name on google or the internet because it is none of their business on what that person does and yeah maybe people can be wrong on the internet but.. that does not mean that some people are negitive in real life expirences, and some people don't even have a "facebook" or any other social network site that you can sign up on.

  34. I think that employers being able to determine whether they want to hire you is, both an invasion of our privacy, and unfair.

  35. i think that it is cool how we have all these wed sites....People have to learn right from rong to get around in life. :(

  36. I think it is fine to look at the persons social media page to find out if they would be a good hire for your company. I also think it is the easiest way to see if your employee is suitable for your company. Because if there not responsible for what they say online they might not be responsible for doing there work or coming in on time to work. Finally if they have dirty picturs or commments on their social media page then they will probaly still do that when they are hired.

  37. i think this in some wnay can help the buisness's to find good employees and get rid of the bad ones. but still things on the internet are not always true. Something are from the past and they stay in the past just because you see a post on facebook from a year ago saying "going to smoke a cig" or "going out to party" doesnt mean they are still doing it. One other thing is people can set you up with facebook and twitter and things like that so if an employer looks on and it is a fake profile of you, you could lose your job or not get the one that you want. all in all i think they should just give people a chance and take a risk every once in a while.

  38. I thik that employers should be able to know what kind of attited there employes have on life it can effect there work and social life.

  39. People who are looking for a job need to be careful what they put on the internet. If I was looking to hire someone who had good people skills and I looked on their facebook account and they were talking down on someone, I would not hire them. Everyone can see what you do on your accounts, so why would you do something that would stop you from getting a job? People need to use common sense and things will work out better for them. And if someone wants to keep their accounts private, then they should make it private so only people who are your friends can see it.

  40. I think that it is bad that you can find things on the internet about your self. you dont want people out there finding thing about you. it would be really bad if it wasnt someone you knew. You want to keep your information safe and make sure no one ealse on the enter net can see and do somthing bad with your information. I dont thing that it is right to have your personal information out on the web.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Digital dirt should not be taken easy because its not right to have your personal information on the online.I searched myself before and it didnt seaarch me it searched up other people.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I personally feel that businesses should be allowed to search the internet on their employers. There shouldn't be anything too personal on the web anyways, because who would want the whole world to see everything about you? You also shouldn't post stupid things on Facebook, Twitter or other websites. If you didn't like your previous job and posted dirt on it to the public, how would your new job know that you wouldn't do that to them? I think it's smart for businesses to search the internet on for new employers.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think its good that employers search the internet to find out the things about you. But it could also be bad because there could be bad stuff on the internet about you that you didnt write. The employers shouldnt hold that stuff against you. But if you did write it, then yes, they should hold it aginst you.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i think that hireing an worker based on what he or she says on there own face page is dumb. you should base them on how well they work and how enthuseastic they are in the work place. people are not telling the truth sometimes on the internet and so what if they swear as long as there not doing it to the costomer you are ok i mean i swear sometimes but do i do it to people that are important noooo i dont and if you tell someone that they cant do something they might not like that and not want to work there. you could have the best worker in the work and guess what if you tell he cant do something he might not like that and say "i will not work here" then he might tell his friends and so on and so fourth but anyway you got what i am saying.

    thank you for listening

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that it is a good idea that the employers search the internet to find things out about the people that work for them. But i don't think they should hold every little thing against you. As long as what they say doesn't affect them as a business it should be left alone.

  47. If I'm looking to hire someone, I would want all the important imformation i can get on them. I wouldn't want a criminal working for me, or someone who's not even going to put forth the effort! If your not happy about people/bosses getting imformation about you from facebook or something, simply don't have one, or watch what you do so you have nothing to worry about. If you don't don't want anyone to find out don't do it. duh.
