Programming in Alice

My district is considering moving away from its introductory programming language of True BASIC and offering nothing in its place. The thought process is to start with Visual Basic or offer Advanced Office and throw in some VB. My compromise suggestion is to consider offering an introductory course in Alice for students grades 10-12. Anyone using this language? Thoughts or insights?

  1. from twitter: jigar_patel...juniata used Alice for one of its CS class. I think if the thought process is prep kids for college, should offer intro to java.

  2. from twitter: jigar_patel... hmm, I would say yes for 11th/12th grade, would leave 10th grade with TrueBasic. Honestly HS was the last time i used VB.

  3. from twitter: jigar_patel...truebasic was essential starting point in learning the core of coding, i think that for 10 would make it easier to learn java

  5. from twitter: jigar_patel... def. not, I think it would work if the first half of the year they did TrueBasic and then moved to Alice for the second half
