Need Help with Video Problems

My seventh grade science and learning support teachers took some great video of their students doing a project / lab on cell respiration. They would like to edit the video, good idea, and put in on blackboard and on a blog, two more wonderful ideas.

They took the video with a Sony digital video cam that stored the video on a small disc. It has cable, but they are not firewire cables. It also has proprietary software with the camera and apparently takes the video in a somewhat proprietary format. The original software install disc is missing. I went to the Sony site and downloaded onto my laptop what I think is the correct software for that camera. Now my laptop is the only laptop on which the film can be edited; not such a wonderful idea since I am in the high school. The seventh grade team may be able to download the software too if Sony allows two downloads. I have not gotten that far yet.

Movie maker does not like the format of the video and so far we have not been able to correctly format the video into something that other places like or will accept either. As i remember, the error we get is codec files are missing. I have tried several file conversion programs. We want to upload this video to a blog or to blackboard for students to view.

The classroom teacher has a flip video camera on order for next year so hopefully this problem will be solved for the future but this year's class would like to see the fruits of their labor and so would their families and friends. Does anyone have a reasonably easy solution that we can complete in less than 2 weeks?
